Substance Abuse Treatment services are a critical component of Lund Family Center’s Residential and Community Treatment Program. Lund’s professional counselors help women and their families address substance abuse issues on an outpatient basis. Drug Treatment services can be accessed by women living in the residential program and by those living in the community. Services aim to provide a coordinated collaborative system of support and services to pregnant and parenting women and their children whose lives have been affected by substance abuse and dependence.
Screening and Assessment
Professional certified counselors conduct screening and assessment to determine the nature of ones use and recommend appropriate treatment using evidence-based tools. Urine screening and analysis is conducted as a part of treatment and used to reinforce recovery as well as a tool in formulating treatment recommendations.
Residential Treatment
Lund Family Center offers Residential Treatment in an 18-bed facility with 24-hour counseling staff, on-site nursing staff, and access to comprehensive treatment services. Eligibility is restricted to pregnant and parenting young women with a substance abuse and/or mental health diagnosis.
Fact: Drug addiction
is a treatable disorder. Through treatment that is tailored
to individual needs, patients can learn to
control their condition and live normal,
productive lives. Like people with diabetes or
heart disease,
people in treatment for drug addiction learn behavioral
changes and often take
medications as part of their treatment regimen.
Case Management
A case manager assesses and helps to address the woman and her family’s needs so the mother can focus on treatment. Lund Family Center's case managers are located in the community, the residential treatment program, and at the Chittenden County Family Court to assist women at any phase of the recovery process while providing timely response for women in trouble so they are not lost in long waits.
Aside from assisting a woman in accessing treatment, a case manager can also assist in finding food, clothing, shelter, transportation, job counseling and training, legal assistance, mental health counseling, and childcare. A case manager will also collaborate with other service providers and agencies involved with a woman or family.
- Recognizing that relapse after treatment is a significant risk, the case manager offers follow-up services to monitor progress and offer support for up to a year after a woman completes treatment.
Individual and Group Counseling
An individualized treatment plan is established using the assessment recommendations and may include individual and/or weekly group counseling sessions. Counseling services at Lund Family Center take a creative approach to maximize the use of inter-agency and community collaboration and are gender specific. Groups support, educate, respect, and value women and emphasize the health and well being of women and their families.
Parent Education and Support
Parent Educators work individually with parents to address their specific parenting goals and identified needs and may also conduct developmental assessments. When appropriate and requested, Lund Family Center Parent Educators will work with fathers or significant others to provide these services as well. Parent education can happen in the home, at Lund, or other designated places as appropriate and during evening hours to accommodate the needs of the family.
Fact: Over the last 25 years,
studies have shown that treatment works to
reduce drug intake and crimes committed by
drug-dependent people.
Researchers also have found that drug abusers
who have been through treatment are more likely
to have jobs.
Family Therapy
A Family Therapist provides family and couple’s counseling to the woman and her identified family members. Counseling can happen in the home, at Lund, or other designated places as appropriate and during evening hours to accommodate the needs of the family.
Medical Case Management
Medical case management is provided to women to assist in pregnancy and childbirth education, pre- and post-natal care, pediatric case management, family planning services, education and support with general health care, and referral to medical care as appropriate. Lund Family Center nurses are well educated in Opiate replacement therapies and can provide education, support, consultation, and referral.
Children’s Services
Parent educators provide individualized support and assessment to children whose lives have been or are at risk of being affected by a parent’s substance use. Parent educators work with the child and parent to support healthy attachment and development of the child and increase the parents understanding of normal developmental needs as well as any special needs the child may have. Services for children also include access to on-site childcare.
Transitional Living Services
The Transition Coordinator works with residents to assist them in developing independent living skills and planning for transition from the program. Services include: help coordinating job training and work experiences, job search assistance, life skills classes, securing affordable housing, using public transportation, and becoming familiar with community resources.
Women can access as many or as few Drug Treatment support services as desired through Lund Family Center, regardless of whether they are receiving treatment elsewhere.
