Educational Programs
Lund Family Center offers two distinct educational programs that work together to support pregnant and parenting young women in their pursuits of their educational goals. The educational programs are:
- New Horizons Educational Program (NHEP)- an alternative high school placement program. NHEP serves up to 35 adolescent mothers on a rolling admissions basis from as many as 14 different school districts per year. NHEP staff produces curriculum agreements with each sending school to ensure that the students receive academic credit toward graduation during their enrollment in NHEP. Last year, nearly a third of NHEP students had dropped out of high school prior to attending the program, and nearly half received special educational services. One-quarter transitioned back to their sending school districts after successfully completing coursework, and four young women graduated from high school through NHEP. Of these graduates, three enrolled in postsecondary programming, one of which was the first person in her family to ever attend college.
- Learning Edge- a GED preparatory program. Learning Edge serves 10 young women per year, providing GED test preparation within a flexible classroom atmosphere that builds healthy peer relationships. Students navigate through a course of study that targets the skills required for passing GED examinations. Learning Edge students also receive postsecondary counseling and have access to college and technical advising. NHEP and Learning Edge team up for field trips, educational resources, guest speakers and team building.
Benefits of Lund’s academic programs include small class size, rolling admission, and student-centered programming within a therapeutic treatment facility. Lund’s Residential and Community Treatment Program specializes in services designed to meet the mental health, parenting and life skill development needs of adolescent mothers, including on site Reach Up, WIC and quality childcare services, nursing staff, parenting and life skills coursework, substance abuse treatment, and transition planning. All students have opportunities to participate in Lund’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Outreach Panel, which travels to schools and community groups to honestly discuss the issue of teen pregnancy first hand. Both NHEP and Learning Edge serve residential and day students.
