Homestudy
A Homestudy is conducted to gain more information about you, your spouse (if applicable), your family, and your lives. It is a tool used to step “into your shoes” and gain insight regarding what it would be like for a child to enter into your family and for your family to accept a child. Some of the things we will talk and look at will be:
- Education
- Current and previous employment
- Childhood (where and how were you raised, discipline methods, and your family structure)
- Relationships with family members (both past and present)
- Marriage and/or current relationships
- Foundation
- Problem solving techniques
- Disciplining methods
- Views on child rearing
- Interests/hobbies
- The adoption process
- Feelings about adoption and adopted children
- Child rearing processes/feelings
- Interviewing any family members we deem necessary including other children in the family (minors and adults if applicable)
- Readiness and preparing to adopt
- Life changes that come along with adopting a child
- Home inspection. Please note that the purpose of the home inspection is primarily to check for appropriate accommodations and safety measures in your home. It is not meant to judge the cleanliness or lavishness.
The purpose of a homestudy is to ensure a healthy fit between the adopted child and family. Our primary concern is that the child will be entering into a safe and healthy home and environment. Any concerns that develop during a homestudy do not necessarily disqualify you from adoption. Concerns and solutions/suggestions will be discussed.
Adoption is a life long decision and should be taken very seriously. Take the time to make sure that all members of your family are ready to make this commitment and get any questions and concerns answered.
