Educational Programs At Lund Family Center
Lund Family Center offers two distinct educational programs that work together to support pregnant and parenting young women in their pursuits of their educational goals. The educational programs are:
- New Horizons Educational Program (NHEP)- an alternative high school placement program. NHEP serves up to 35 adolescent mothers on a rolling admissions basis from as many as 15 different school districts per year. NHEP staff produces curriculum agreements with each sending school to ensure that the students receive academic credit toward graduation during their enrollment
in NHEP. Last year, over half of the NHEP students had dropped out of high school prior to attending the program.
- GED Preparation Program - Young women are provided GED test preparation within a flexible classroom atmosphere that builds healthy peer relationships. Students navigate through a course of study that targets the skills required for passing GED examinations. Students also receive post secondary counseling and have access to college and technical advising. NHEP and GED students team up for field trips, educational resources, guest speakers and team building.
Benefits of Lund’s academic programs include small class size, rolling admission, and student-centered programming within a therapeutic treatment facility. Lund’s Residential and Community Treatment Program specializes in services designed to meet the mental health, parenting and life skill development needs of adolescent mothers, including on site Reach Up, WIC and quality childcare services, nursing staff, parenting and
life skills coursework, substance abuse treatment, and transition planning.
All students have opportunities to participate in Lund’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Outreach Panel, which travels to schools and community groups to honestly discuss the issue of teen pregnancy first hand. Both NHEP and the GED program serve residential and day students.
- Lund Early Childhood Program
Lund Early Childhood Program is a Vermont Licensed and NAEYC Accredited program that serves 28 children from two weeks to three years of age. This onsite childcare is available Monday through Friday from 7:30-5:30 and serves both residential and community families. The philosophy of the program encompasses a child-centered approach to early childhood education, in which curriculum is based off of the interests of the children. These professionals, with early childhood education backgrounds, are also available to provide parenting support and education to women and families while working collaboratively with treatment providers to ensure optimal support.
